Baby milk: filling nutritional needs or marketing niches?


A researcher says baby milk is more expensive than milk and is generally less nutritious.
A grocery store’s infant formula aisles tend to store a lot of options. In addition to the different brands of pastels and buckets, there are special formulas – some used to reduce exhalation, gas or colic. Over the past decade or so, the company has introduced a formula for children who are leaving the bottle.
“Your face is a set of chaos, they look very similar, when are you going to use a label, or from one tag to switch to another, or indeed to stop using these labels, and give your children to food,” university of New York City public health researcher Jennifer Pomeranz, said he recently analyzed the grocery store aisle of children’s drinks. Her findings appeared last month in the journal of preventive medicine.
The rich choices reflect the tendency of parents to feed their youngest family members. There is plenty of scientific evidence that what children eat in their first few years lays the foundation for their physical and brain development for the rest of their lives.
But children don’t know how important their diet is. So parents feel anxious when they push out new foods. “For many parents, from breastfeeding or infant formula milk powder is transferred to the whole milk powder is terrible, it seems to be a big change,” the association of American pediatricians nutrition committee chairman Steven Abrams said.
Formula makers say this is where baby milk comes in. Baby milk is sold to picky eaters, who are thought to be familiar with their departure, but more mature breast milk or formula. Still, manufacturers are keen to pursue the market. According to the university of Connecticut, manufacturers spent $16 million promoting infant formula in 2015, compared with $9 million for infant formula. In its two most recent annual reports in 2014 and 2015, Enfagrow infant formula company mead Johnson nutrition said the growth of “growing milk” in the United States and Canada was strong.
We chatted with Pomeranz about the products she found. Our conversation is edited for length and clarity.
What is baby milk, and how are these products different from infant formula?
This is actually a difficult product category. When we first started this project, it took months to determine what to call these things, because there were so many names, and the words in Europe were different from those used here.
Whatever product is referred to as the follow-up formula, follow-on formula, or growing milk, all these transition formula contain similar ingredients: milk powder, corn syrup solids and other sweeteners, vegetable oil and sodium. Infant formula also contains milk powder and corn syrup solids, but the FDA strictly regulates all infant formula under 12 months of nutrition.
Without these nutrients, most infant formula contains more sugar, fat and sodium.
Why do you look at baby milk labels?
In addition to standardizing the ingredients for infant formula, the FDA also sets standards for baby label products. Manufacturers must include a specific nutrition group and a statement to “follow the instructions of the doctor”, and they can only make certain kinds of statements on the infant formula on the package.
These rules do not apply once the formula is applied to children over 12 months, so it makes sense to study the 17 children’s milk labels available for the study.
In most cases, baby formula is hard to tell apart from the baby formula on the shelf. They have similar colors and expressions. But baby milk is often cheaper, and lower prices mean that parents may mistakenly buy the products for their babies.
Do you have any Suggestions for these formulas?
My point is that these companies created a fake feeding period, and they’re full of this new product. Now we are increasing the consumption of reprocessed foods that did not exist before.
But in order to regulate products that will remain on the market, it will help to assign them a standard name so that parents know what they want, she said. It will eliminate some confusion by requiring labels to clearly state that infant drinks do not apply to infants.
An instruction to encourage parents to check with a pediatrician before giving their children a drink is also good. Given that most toddlers perform well in food, water and milk, these transitional formulations are generally not recommended by pediatricians.
